Peace First Mural

February 13th, 2012 by Don

This summer we helped PS 335 paint a mural for their Peace First program. Peace First is a fantastic organization that teaches conflict resolution in schools, and this mural was supposed to symbolize their message. The kids came up with the design, and with the help of the talented Peace First volunteers and the hindrance of the not-so-talented Authentic volunteers, we managed to put it on the wall. Here’s the finished mural (I did the outline on the world and between the colors).

PS 335 is hoping to do a different mural every year and, if they’ll have us, we’ll be back the help with the next one too!

Fight Gone Bad Fundraiser

September 26th, 2011 by Authentic

On September 17, Jon Rubinstein participated in the Fight Gone Bad 6 nationwide fundraiser. FGB6 raised almost $2.3 million in support of the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, CrossFit Kids, and Camp Patriot. Jon participated at CrossFit718 in Brooklyn and raised $1520. Fight Gone Bad 6 involved over 16,000 athletes from over 1,000 gyms putting themselves through an insane workout to benefit an important cause. Additionally, Authentic matched this number and made a donation in support of Save the Children’s famine relief programs in the Horn of Africa. Jon said, “I’m so thankful to all the amazing donors who helped support this cause, and I’m doubly thankful I didn’t puke. It was touch and go there for a while.”

New Light in Kalighat

September 15th, 2011 by Authentic

In May 2011, I joined America Ferrera and Nick Kristof in Kolkata, India, where America and Nick filmed a segment for the upcoming PBS special (to air in 2012) based on Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn’s bestselling book. We spent much of our time at New Light in Kalighat, a very poor area and one of the city’s oldest red light districts which is also home to Mother Teresa’s home for the dying and destitute. New Light, which is run by the extraordinary Urmi Basu, is a secular nonprofit charitable trust that works to educate and care for the children of local sex workers. New Light provides food, health care, education, shelter, and recreation to hundreds of kids. New Light also works on HIV/AIDS care and prevention,  legal aid, microcredit for women, and also operates a shelter for the children of the Dalit, the traditionally “untouchable” cast.

Save the Children

September 15th, 2011 by Authentic

In January, 2011, Jane Berliner and I joined America Ferrera on a visit to southern Mali to learn about Save the Children’s education programs in the region. We flew into Bamako, and drove to Ségou and Sikasso, and to small villages in the region like Dioro, Tabarako, Ifola and Diassadeni. We got to witness firsthand the incredible work Save the Children is doing there, in this incredibly poor but vibrant and friendly country, with 800,000 children not in school. On our return, we raised $44,000 to help Save the Children build a new school in Diassadeni, to replace the dilapidated school where the student were previously crammed into classrooms. The new school opened in late 2010! Additionally, America was featured in Time Magazine, on CNN’s Impact Your World, and in many other major media outlets, helping to raise awareness about Save the Children’s education programs worldwide.
