Save the Children

In January, 2011, Jane Berliner and I joined America Ferrera on a visit to southern Mali to learn about Save the Children’s education programs in the region. We flew into Bamako, and drove to Ségou and Sikasso, and to small villages in the region like Dioro, Tabarako, Ifola and Diassadeni. We got to witness firsthand the incredible work Save the Children is doing there, in this incredibly poor but vibrant and friendly country, with 800,000 children not in school. On our return, we raised $44,000 to help Save the Children build a new school in Diassadeni, to replace the dilapidated school where the student were previously crammed into classrooms. The new school opened in late 2010! Additionally, America was featured in Time Magazine, on CNN’s Impact Your World, and in many other major media outlets, helping to raise awareness about Save the Children’s education programs worldwide.
